On June 3, Cincinnati Bitcoin hosts “Don’t Ask Permission: John Milton, Satoshi and Bitcoin,” an exploration of the enduring question of who controls access to speech, publishing, and financial participation.
Long before Bitcoin, thinkers were wrestling with a similar question: who gets permission to speak, publish, and participate? Starting with Areopagitica, John Milton’s famous defense of unlicensed printing in 17th-century England, we’ll trace the ideas that ultimately echo in Satoshi Nakamoto’s creation of Bitcoin.
