Why Bitcoiners Pay Just to Talk to Each Other

Club Orange

Most social networks want as many eyes on screens as possible. Club Orange wants something very different: to get Bitcoiners off their phones and into the same room.

Last week, Club Orange released version 4.4.3 of its app. On paper, the update is unremarkable: some bug fixes, clearer seed phrase recovery screens, and easier-to-find QR codes. None of that sounds like headline material. But taken together, the changes point to what Club Orange is trying to build: a place where Bitcoiners can find one another, arrange to meet and use bitcoin without having to think too hard about the underlying technology.

The Case for a Paywall

Unlike almost every mainstream platform, Club Orange puts a cover charge on entry.

According to its FAQ, “free trials attract the wrong kind of users such as spammers, scammers, bots, shitcoiners, and low engagement users.” The idea is that a paid membership creates a higher entry point and gives people a reason to take the community seriously.

As founder Matteo Pellegrini noted on the Bitcoin Infinity Show, put a zero-dollar price tag on a platform today, and you instantly get flooded by bots, crypto scammers, and AI-generated noise. Charging a fee acts as a filter, keeping the signal-to-noise ratio high and ensuring that the people inside actually want to be there.

It won’t appeal to everyone, but the approach seems to be working. The project, which originally launched as the Orange Pill App in late 2022, now boasts over 20,000 members across 71 countries.

Solving the Technical Friction

Getting people to sign up was never the hard part. Getting them to use Lightning was.

A study by Breez revealed that up to 90% of Club Orange users had never actually executed a Lightning transaction. For an app built entirely around Bitcoin, that was a glaring problem. People might join to meet like-minded individuals, but asking newcomers to navigate wallets, channels and nodes can quickly turn a simple signup into a technical exercise.

Club Orange spent the past few years tweaking this experience:

  • Self-Custody Made Simple: After running a custodial wallet in 2025 to ease newcomers in, the app moved to a Spark-backed self-custodial wallet. You hold your own 12-word seed phrase. If Club Orange shut down tomorrow, your sats stay yours.
  • GeoZaps: “Airdrop” sats to members across a city or region. One tap to introduce yourself to a new local scene or back an event host.
  • Cash App Integration: US users can buy sats directly through Cash App. No juggling multiple apps.

No More “Only Bitcoiner in Town”

If you live in Austin, Berlin, or Prague, finding a local Bitcoin meetup isn’t hard. But if you live in a small town, trying to talk about self-sovereignty or monetary policy can feel like talking to a brick wall.

That’s where the app’s event directory, which lists over 400 global meetups, and local chats come in. Version 4.4.3 links group chats directly with event RSVPs. Instead of showing up blind to a meetup, attendees can see who’s coming and chat beforehand.

For solo stackers in isolated towns, those global group chats and approximate-location tools (which obscure your precise location within a ~10-mile radius) offer a lifeline: technical help, book recommendations, and validation that you’re not crazy.

There’s also room to build on that connection. Club Orange already has a merchant directory and a map of Bitcoin-accepting businesses, while ticketing has been discussed as a future possibility, potentially bringing event discovery, payments and local businesses closer together. That would give the app more reasons to be useful beyond the occasional conversation or meetup.

Whether Club Orange can transition from a niche app into a permanent fixture of daily Bitcoin usage remains to be seen. But by focusing on high-signal local connections over viral engagement, it’s proving that some people are willing to pay for a social network—so long as it actually gives them something real in return.
