ATL BitDevs Learning Bitcoin #21 – Josh Doman: Confidential Script Project

ATL BitDevs Learning Bitcoin #20

The ATL BitDevs Meetup is a community event dedicated to free and open education about Bitcoin. Each session dives into the inner workings of Bitcoin, offering participants the chance to learn not just what Bitcoin is, but how it actually functions at a technical level.

While the discussions are designed with a strong technical focus, the meetup remains open to people of all skill levels. Whether someone is completely new to Bitcoin or already comfortable with its protocols, the event provides a welcoming space to ask questions, expand knowledge, and connect with others who are passionate about understanding Bitcoin at its core.

What should I expect?

Every first Wednesday of the month is a Learning Bitcoin session at ATL BitLab. This week’s topic will be posted ahead of time at atlbit.dev. Sometimes it may be a reading discussion group, other times it might be a presentation or workshop.

Regardless, you do not need any prior knowledge to attend. Just come with an open mind.

Tonight’s Topic

confidential-script-lib is a Rust library for emulating Bitcoin script by converting script path spends to key path spends. Intended for use inside a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), the library validates unlocking conditions and then authorizes the transaction using a deterministically derived private key.

This approach enables confidential execution of complex script, including opcodes not yet supported by the Bitcoin protocol. The actual on-chain footprint is a minimal key-path spend, and it is compatible with `rust-bitcoinkernel`, or a fork thereof.

The goal is to allow developers to experiment with features not yet supported on mainnet (ex: `OP_CAT`, `OP_CTV`, `OP_CCV`, or new languages like Simplicity), in a permissionless manner with minimal trust assumptions. This could provide a useful compromise in the soft fork debate and allow the community to see which upgrades have real world demand.

Is this for me?
If you want to learn about bitcoin, then yes! While these sessions are engineering focused, many of our attendees are not engineers. Our crew also includes designers, hobbyists, product managers, entrepreneurs, and simply curious people who like to stay ahead of the curve with this technology.
